Other than defense what other skills should a defender have

The second most important is definitely Pace.

After Pace it's Tech, PM & Passing, but dependning who you ask they'll disagree on the order of importance - but they're all important!

Pace and defence are always the important things - pace is no secondary really

When you're starting out a bit of tech is the next thing - to save embarrassment losing the ball near your own goal.

When you can afford enough tech to ride out the average striker's tackling - then you progress to getting PM+passing - in that order although they are most useful in combination. Personally once tech and PM are higher than very good I don't worry about them much and max out passing.... after getting the highest defence and pace possible

To me at lower levels Pace has far more importance than even defending but one must not forget that Stategic placement in tactics can make or break how good a defender is.
