Subject: Is there any point in buying young players?

I'm referring to players in areas where you are not training. e.g. I'm looking to strengthen my squad in ATT(I traind DEFs) but I'm not rich. Its difficult to get the players that I want for the price money I have. I can't seem to improve my squad unless (a) I buy players 28+ (b) I spend more.
But lets say I did have the money. Is it even worth me buying a hot shot 21 year old? I'm not going to train them so I'm competeing with ATT trainers who will get a bigger ROI than me.
Just wondered what otehr coaches did?

Especially if you have low level HC and assistants. I have an older keeper and defenders as I never train those areas really, and my HC has low keeper and defence skills.

For non-training positions in your 1st team buy mature - much cheaper
for the b team you could get some young cheap filler players and hope a pop or 2 will mean you make a small profit

Well I would say 26 onwards is mature, I bought 28 yr olds for my team as they are cheapish to buy. You end up losing a bit on them but the extra quality you can afford helps more in keeping fans happy and joining. Plus filling the stadium as much as possible. Hope that helps.
Thanks wdp74 and Vancian... it makes total sense and was what I had come to the conclusion of.
just wanted to confirm this with other coaches.

Take your time and know the market, and you can still buy older (28 or older) players and make a small profit on them when selling, if you buy them cheap.
as you are likely to be looking at a playoff at the end of the season a couple of decent 27yr olds would be a worthwhile investment for sure. you'll still get a few seasons out of them too.
I've been surprised that I cannot get an improvement to the players I want with money I have. Floggin my crappy trainees early didn't get me the funds I required either.
I remember how painful it is to upgrade players - you can't afford anything worth having until you sell trained players off. Even then the money should go on better trainees.
Eventually you sell off someone you've trained and realise you already have a replacement ready so you can splash out.
