Can someone explain in laymans terms how offsides works. I have forgotten (Haven't played soccer in a decade).
a forward can never be behind the last defender when the pass to him is initiated
He can be past the last defender when he receives the pass...but not before the pass is released.
in fact, if you want to see a great example of this, watch minutes 76-79 of my match against Skull last Sunday. Ninniharju scores a goal that, if you didn't know any better, you'd swear he was offsides. but he outruns the defense after the pass is made to open space, and is left with a high percentage scoring chance.

The way you explain the rule is perfect, but if you read the official Rules Book, it is explain differently because of some cases. In the Official one it is said that to be offside at the moment of the pass, you have to have 1 opponent player in front of your player who's receiving the pass. 95% of the times will be the Goal Keeper, but in some cases when the GK is out of the penalty box or when we are talking about an offsidevery close to goal line, you can have a defender in front of you and be in Offside.
It is never offside, no matter how many players you have in front of you , when the pass you receive it's backward, or horizontal to Your player.

One other thing, if the ball is closer to the goal line than the next to last defender, then the ball is the line of determination at the time the pass is made.
true, but that's basically implied in my comment.
Although I wasn't aware of the other nuances to the rule. Interesting.

Implied means: to indicate or suggest without being explicitly stated.
I figured the OP needed as much information as possible and that he may not get your "so-called" implied message about the ball's position in relation to the next to last defender and offside.
I know I failed to see it and I have played and officiated the game.

What i'm talking is about official rules, we have to see if they implemented in the Sokker Engine, i never noticed or see it happen yet.
Another thing, IS never offside on Throws IN as well........^_^
