No you can save tactics at any time. Try this

Go to "Create new tactics based on:" and select any one

Enter a name for it

Click Create

It should now appear in the list of formations above. Select it, edit it to how you like in the grid and then save via bottom right of the tactic grid.

im guessing you are trying to overwrite one of the default tactics which cant be done.
try creating a new one as nin suggested, and then make a few changes - try just 1-2 squares of changes and save to see if it works.

Thanks for the speedy replies & help. And thanks to Decka for the welcome!

I wasn't actually explaining myself correctly. My apologies! I have no problems creating a new tactic but I cannot set it as my match tactics. I have created a few sets of tactics that I want to save for my up coming match but when I go into match orders the tactics are set as Normal. I'll explain what I am doing and hopefully you can see what I am doing wrong!

Firstly, in the Matches page I am clicking on Match orders. In Match orders my tastics are currently set as normal. At this point I click on the edit button which brings me to "Tactics editor - Argus Athletic". Here I am clicking on a set of tactics I have already edits eg: on called "defending". Once this is selected & showing on the pitch I click save. Unfortunately, this then results in the following message - Tactic cannot be saved: Defending.

I also managed to pick the team I wanted for the first game I played but now can't find the option to pick the team again to make changes!

What you need to do is sleect 'squad' at the top of the match orders page. It should be the page where you can change your starting line up and subs. Under the picture of the pitch on that page there should be a drop down menu of all the tactics you have. Just select one and then press save

getting used to the layout takes a bit of time, but once you have the basics its not too bad.

next step after that is finding what players and skills are needed for each position :)
