Beginning next season I would like to introduce a new idea, namely New York State Championship. It could be a part of a bigger project involving as many states as possible but we shall see. In a few weeks I will make an announcement of it on Sokker USA forum giving it the bigger exposure.
This tournament is aimed at choosing the best team in New York every season and its 2 phase system will not interfere with US Open Cup or NSW in any way and will allow to let any team participate in the cup for as long as possible.
Eventually, I will send the formal invitations to all New York team from A and B Leagues. C League teams are encouraged to post here if they are interested in participation. Actually any team is welcome to do it so we know at which stage we are progressing.
SYSTEM:
- Only the teams from New York State are allowed to participate.
- The Championship will consist of 2 Phases: Elimination Round and Final Four (in certain cases Final Six).
- The Tournament starts on week 5 (Wednesday 6) of the season with the Elimination Round and will involve all the teams that have been eliminated from US Open Cup.
- Any team that has made it past the 5th Round of US Open Cup will qualify for Final Four (Final Six) automatically.
- If 2 or less teams make it past the 5th Round of US Open Cup we will play the Final Four – home and away weeks 9 through 14.
- If 3 or more teams make it past the 5th Round of US Open Cup we will play the Final Six – single matches only weeks 9 through 13.
- The Elimination Round will last between 1 and 4 weeks depending on the number of teams – all the possibilities will be explained in a separate post.
- All the teams will be seeded according to the ranking points before any draws required and draw results will be posted gradually every hour in order to keep the participants in suspense.
- Any do or die matches will be single (cup system) and played at lower ranked team stadium.
- The managers must post their team name on this forum, do not join any friendly leagues until they are eliminated from NY Championship and be willing to cooperate in order to participate.

Assuming there are 0-4 teams from New York that made it past 5th Round of US Open Cup and total of 6-12 teams that are participating in NY State Championship we will play the different systems of Elimination Round. There are 24 such scenarios.
The Groups will play in as many cases as possible – draws based on ranking points, but occasionally there will be single elimination matches in Cup System (to be played at lower ranked team stadium).
ELIMINATION ROUND SCENARIOS:
When there are 2 spots for Final Four/Final Six left:

5 – one match of Preliminary Round (lowest seeded teams) + one group of 4, single matches
4 weeks, 2 top teams will qualify
6 – two groups of 3, playing 3 formally friendly matches 2-3, 1-3, 2-1 (1 – highest seeded team, 3- lowest seeded team)
3 weeks, 2 top teams will qualify
7 - three matches of Preliminary Round (lowest seeded teams) + one group of 4, single matches
4 weeks, 2 top teams will qualify
8 - two groups of 4, single matches
