I have a question:
When I read books about Greek history or even historical novels, I see Greek names which are rather different than those of the Greek people I meet in our time. It doesn't have to be famous names like Alcibiades or Pericles or Euryptolemus, but also less familiar names like Gnossos, Deinomache or Xenares.
Now, I understand that names change through the years... also in Israel you find less people with biblical names like Abraham (Avraham) or Jacob (Ya'akov).
My question is; do you know people in your family or circle of friends that have names which are archaic. If so, what are these names?

Most of the modern Greek names are Christian actually.
My mother's name though is 'Antigoni'. :-)
On the other hand, my father is named 'Manolis', 'cause it's mandatory for every family in Crete to have at least one 'Manolis'. :-PPPP
Also, as most of us have noticed, in sokker there are a lot of archaic Greek names. e.g I have an 'Anaximandros' in my team.
p.s: OMG, I had to look five times in a web dictionary, and spend 11 minutes, to write just 4 lines in English.
My English suck. :-(

I have compiled a list of names which I might want to use in my book.
Since the plot takes place at around 170BC the names have to be appropriate for that period.
Other than the true names of historical figures of that time, I have already used these names for fictional characters:
Malineus, Elpida, Orestes, Nikodemos.
I have also compiled a list of names which I might use in other parts of the book, these are:
Male - Aristeus, Xenares, Anaxibius, Diotimus, Thrasybulus, Philoteles, Phoebidas, Demades, Eurymedon, Alcaeus, Mantitheus, Acumenus, Pythiades, Apsephion and Pythodorus.
Female - Aspasia, Cleonice, Hipparete, Merope and Amycla.
I have many more names on my list but the sound of these names appeal to me in context of the story.
Now I need advice from you guys,... please.
Can you please tell me if these names above are correct and more important... appropriate for the period that I'm talking about. Is it reasonable for Greek people to have these names at that time (around 170BC)?

im not sure about these 2 Cleonice, Hipparete also for male you can add Aristodimos :P female arg i cant remember anything :S
Why are you not sure about Cleonice & Hipparete? Are they too modern? too ancient for that period? are they spelt incorrectly?
im not sure about the right spellin of Cleonice and Hipparete hmm is rly old :S
